This module will examine key elements of social theories that developed in modern and contemporary China and their influence on Chinese society. It is an introduction to major aspects of social theories in China. Students should reflect upon social, philosophical and ideological thoughts of socialism, nationalism, neo-liberalism, communism, Confucianism all of which have influenced social development in China. Ethnographic accounts of traditional and contemporary China will be used in the discussion of each theory.
