Focusing on the themes of conflict, communication and globalisation, this module provides interdisciplinary studies of modern and contemporary China. It offers theoretical and methodological considerations on dealing with conflict and communication between China and foreign countries, e.g. The Opium Wars, the Sino-Japanese Wars, the Cold War and Sino-American relations.

This module also explores the conflict and communication between social classes and ethnic groups within China, such as the Anti-Manchu movement and the Nationalist Revolution, the Chinese Civil War, the Cultural Revolution, the Free Tibet Movement, ethnic conflicts in Xinjiang and Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement. Students will be required to reflect upon social, philosophical and ideological thoughts of socialism, capitalism, communism, nationalism, neo-liberalism, Confucianism all of which have influenced the development of China.
