Overview Overview

This module aims at developing students' competence in Mandarin Chinese and is suitable for students who have never studied the language before. This is an intensive accelerated course in Chinese language and culture that is designed to provide a solid foundation for a degree programme in Chinese Studies. The course aims to develop students' confidence and accuracy when using Mandarin in a range of situations. Students will also be introduced to Chinese culture and society through various media. In-class activities will include repetitions, dictations, re-creations of dialogues, group conversations and role plays. By the end of the module, students will have acquired a vocabulary of around 100 Chinese characters and be able to express themselves in spoken and written Mandarin.

Core lectures are supported by language laboratory work and intensive language tutorials. Additional work with self-access material is also required.
This module is aligned to the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) at level 1, where the emphasis is on achieving a fundamental level of communication in all four skills, (listening, speaking, reading and writing). A student achieving an overall mark of 60% or higher in this module will have demonstrated linguistic competence commensurate with HSK level 1.
