• To provide the student with (a) a networking experience in an international setting, and (b) a basic competence in a modern language other than English (if require/desirable).

• A research visit of no less than 2 weeks to an international research laboratory. The visit is arranged by (and subject to the agreement of) the PhD supervisor. It is expected that the research visit will not be directly funded by the University. Where knowledge of a foreign language (other than English) is required/desirable students may take a preparatory course (if available) to achieve basic competence in that language. Provision is the responsibility of the Language centre and subject to resource availability.

• Other detail(s): Without Language Assessment: Research assessment will take the form of: (a) a brief report from the external laboratory head detailing attendance, research performance and integration/communication (40%); (b) a written report (500-1000 words) outlining the research performed (40%); and (c) an oral presentation of research performed (20%). With Language Assessment: Language assessment will be based on oral and written examination (40%). Research assessment will take the form of: (a) a brief report from the external laboratory head detailing attendance, research performance and integration/communication (30%); (b) a written report (500-1000 words) outlining the research performed (20%); and (c) an oral presentation of research performed (10%).

• Pass standard: 60%

• Fail (-40%): Pass (60%): Distinction (70+%) To achieve distinction a student must complete the module within a single semester. If the module is incomplete the student will receive a grade of “did not complete” and if possible can complete the module in the next available session.
