Module DRUG DELIVERY AND PHARMACOKINETICS

Module code: CH432
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module examines three important areas of pharmaceutical chemistry:

(i) Drug Metabolism. The course introduces the following concepts: phases and purpose of drug metabolism; sites of drug metabolism; mechanisms of biotransformation; liver metabolism and the cytochrome P450 system; metabolic enzymes induction and inhibition; biologically reactive metabolites.

(ii) Pharmacokinetics. The course covers the general principles of pharmacokinetics, drug formulations and routes of administration, the factors which affect the efficacy of compounds (particularly those associated with absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion as core processes), transport across biological membranes, plasma concentration-time curves, and compartment modelling.

(iii) The Physicochemical Basis of Pharmaceuticals: The application of physical chemistry to pharmaceutical science. Key concepts such as phase transitions in formulations of pharmaceuticals and the physical chemistry of disperse systems are covered. Particle sizing the pharmaceutical industry is also discussed.
