Module MATERIALS CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH426
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Nanochemistry, polymer chemistry and colloid chemistry.

This module examines three important areas of materials science:

(i) Nanochemistry: This course introduces the new topic of Nanochemistry and the application of Chemistry to Nanotechnology. The course starts with AFM and STM (nanoprobe techniques). The synthesis of nanoparticles is then introduced and some of the more recent applications of nanoparticles are described. Finally, carbon nanotubes are described together with some of their recent applications.

(ii) Organic Polymer Chemistry: This course starts with the history and classes of synthetic organic polymers. Polymerization mechanisms (radical, cationic, anionic) and initiator types, chain transfer, head-to-tail addition, polymer chain branching and polymer stereochemistry are discussed. Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Biodegradable polymers: synthesis and structural properties. The physical properties of polymer: molecular weight and glass transition temperature.

(iii) Colloid Chemistry: This course introduces the basic principles of colloid science, including the nature of colloid solutions, the forces involved in colloidal stability, and the link between colloids and surfaces. Topics covered are: surface tension and wetting, self-assembly, emulsions, charged colloids and granular materials. Industrial and biological applications of colloid science are also discussed.
