Module ADVANCED ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH405C
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Alkaloid chemistry and advanced organic synthesis.

This module covers two areas of organic chemistry:
(i) Alkaloid chemistry. Material covered includes: introduction to alkaloid chemistry; elucidation of their structures using modern methods; classical and modern methods of their synthesis.

(ii) Organic synthesis I: The material covered in this section includes the use of enamines and silyl enol ethers as enolate equivalents, epoxide ring formation and regioselective epoxide ring opening, as well as the use of Pd catalysis in synthesis.

Organic synthesis II: The retrosynthetic or disconnection approach to the synthetic design of organic molecules. (i) overview of retrosynthetic analysis including associated nomenclature and graphic symbols, (ii) evaluation of good and bad disconnections, (iii) retrosynthetic analysis of selected molecules drawn from different structural classes.
