Module INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH401C
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module covers three important areas in inorganic chemistry:
(i) Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms. Material covered includes: inner sphere/outer sphere electron transfer mechanisms of metal complexes; ligand substitutions of square planar complexes; oxidative-addition and reductive elimination reactions of metal complexes.
(ii) d-Block organometallic chemistry and catalysis. Material covered includes: bonding in organometallic complexes; 18-electron rule, electron counting and oxidation states; CO and phosphines as ligands; homogeneous catalysis; the steps involved in catalytic cycles; examples of catalytic cycles; the factors important in designing a homogeneous catalyst; alkene metathesis; Ziegler Natta polymerization.
(iii) Main group organometallic chemistry. Material covered includes: organometallic chemistry of Groups 1, 2, 13, and 14, including structure and bonding, synthesis and reactions; commercially important reactions and compounds; trends within groups and with similar ligands (for example, cyclopentadienyl ligand).
