Biopharmaceutical chemistry and structure determination methods for biomolecules.
This module examines two important areas of pharmaceutical and biomedical chemistry: (i) Biopharmaceutical chemistry. This part of the module focuses on the concepts behind the design and development of biopharmaceuticals and biologics and their roles in modern pharmaceutical chemistry and biotechnology. The course material reviews the different sources of biopharmaceuticals, and mostly focuses on the biomanufacturing process. The biochemical and molecular mechanisms of action of specific classes of biopharmaceutical drugs, such as antibodies, and the role of glycosylation of biologics is also reviewed.
(ii) Structural determination methods for biomolecules: Material covered includes: Structure of biomolecules for example, biological macromolecules- proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and fats and small biomolecules for example small peptides, amino acids, monosaccharides and nucleotides; chemical analysis of proteins and peptides, ESI, MALDI and Tandem Mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and hardware development, FT-NMR, 2-D NMR, X-ray crystallography. Emphasis will be placed on relating each technique to determining protein structure.
