Module TRANSITION METAL CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH331
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

(i) Physical and chemical trends of selected d-block metals (electron configuration, size, electronegativity, oxidation states…). Occurrence, extraction, uses, Ellingham Diagrams. Binary compounds, oxides and halides. Electrochemistry of “d-block” elements. Latimer and Frost-Ebsworth diagrams.

(ii) Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms. Material covered includes: inner sphere/outer sphere electron transfer mechanisms of metal complexes; ligand substitutions of square planar complexes. Trans effect.

(iii) Introduction to crystal field theory (octahedral, tetrahedral and square planar). Jahn Teller distortion. Common types of electronic transitions in d-block metal complexes d-d (use of Orgel diagrams), Metal-Ligand Charge Transfer, Ligand-Metal Charge Transfer. Magnetism of d-block metal ions in coordination complexes.
