Module ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH301C
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

The chemistry of benzene. Extended reaction chemistry of the carbonyl group. Pericyclic reactions and Frontier Orbital Theory.

This module examines three core areas of organic chemistry:

(i) The Chemistry of benzene.
The material covered in this section includes an introduction to the structure, nomenclature and reactivity of benzene and its monosubstituted derivatives.

(ii) Application of carbonyl group chemistry in organic synthesis
The material covered in this section includes (i) a-hydrogen acidity, (ii) acid and base promoted keto-enol tautomerism, (iii) a-enolate chemistry, including alkylation (iv) named reactions including Michael reaction, Aldol addition, Aldol condensation, Claisen condensation (v) ring forming reactions including Dieckman condensation and Robinson annulations

(iii) Pericyclic reactions.
The material covered in this section includes analyses of electrocyclic reactions, cycloaddition reactions and sigmatropic rearrangements by both a frontier orbital approach and by application of Woodward-Hoffmann rules.
