Module PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH203
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module covers three important areas of Physical Chemistry:

(i) Thermodynamics. Material covered includes: the first law of thermodynamics; the temperature dependence of enthalpy; entropy; the second law of thermodynamics; the Gibbs free energy function; and the relationship between the Gibbs energy and equilibrium.

(ii) Kinetics. This topic is introduced with a review of model rate laws, and with basic calculus, establishes integrated rate laws. From the rate laws, expressions for the lifetime and half-life are obtained. Kinetic parameters that govern chemical catalysis and enzyme activity are investigated. Determination of enzymatic kinetic parameters using Lineweaver Burk plots.

(iii) Molecular Orbital Theory. The Molecular orbital approximation and chemical bonding. Application of qualitative molecular orbital theory approximations to construction of energy level diagrams for homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomic molecules. Introduction to molecular photoelectron spectroscopy (PES).
