This module will focus on the principles and practices of qualitative methodologies for research. Various approaches to research design will be explored, including: how to come up with a research question; how to carry out a literature review; how to select an appropriate research methodology; and how to cite and reference sources appropriately.

The course will explore a variety of qualitative approaches, such as case study, historiography, grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenology and action research. Students will investigate the application of these approaches to their research through discussion and critical examination of key studies in relevant areas. They will learn how to apply various techniques of data collection, such as observation, participation, textual analysis,
interviews and focus groups. The course will also cover the importance of ethics in undertaking research and in handling personal data, including sensitive data.
