On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• To provide student with a basic competence in a modern language other than English.
• To provide students with a networking experience in an international setting.

• Inter-institutional and inter-departmental. Students take a preparatory course to achieve basic competence in Chinese or a modern European language other than English. Provision is the responsibility of the Language centre and subject to resource availability. This is followed by a research visit of no less than 2 weeks to a research laboratory in Europe or China. The visit is arranged by (and subject to the agreement of) the PhD supervisor. It is expected that the research visit will not be directly funded by the University.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Language assessment will be based on oral and written examination (40%). Research assessment will take the form of a) a brief report from the host laboratory head detailing attendance, research performance and integration/communication (30%); and b) a written report (500-1000 words) outlining the research performed (20%); and c) an oral presentation of research performed (10%).
