• Implement appropriate safety precautions for general laboratory work and work in an aseptic manner when appropriate.
• Use on-line databases to access scientific literature.
• Explain the principle of the polymerase chain reaction and apply this technique at the practical level.
• Explain the basic principles of electrophoresis, high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and flow cytometry.
• Measure protein concentration and determine enzyme activities using spectrophotometry.
• Be proficient in the use a light microscope, an inverted microscope, a haemocytometer.
• Subculture mammalian cells, isolate white blood cells from spleen, assess cell viability.
• Collate and analyse experimental data statistically using appropriate statistical packages and software.
