On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-
Understand the use of, and requirement for, large-scale production of recombinant proteins.
-
Explain the concept of mass transfer in bioprocessing, and compare and contrast mass transfer limitations of reactions in homogenous and heterogenous bioreactions.
-
Analyse the importance of fluid dynamics in bioprocessing.
-
Describe the properties of, and modifications to, lignocellulose that enable its use for bioethanol production by fermentation.
-
Critically analyse the types of carbohydrate-degrading enzymes in fungi, and identification and production strategies for their extraction and use.
-
Evaluation of nanobiotechnology and its applications in assay development.
-
Compare and contrast the various strategies used in modern biotechnology for high-value reagent production.
-
Describe and assess the importance of bioprocessing in the generation of biological products (e.g., bioethanol diagnostics, and other biological products).
