Topics covered include: procedures for micropropagation of plants using tissue culture plants, the production of valuable chemicals by cell cultures, in vitro mutagenesis, somatic hybridization, procedures for genetic transformation of plants, and applications in the following areas: shelf-life of fruit and vegetables, herbicide resistance, pest and disease resistance, tolerance of environmental stresses, improved nutritional quality of crops, improved production or altered composition of natural products such as wood and oils, and the production of pharmaceuticals including antibodies and vaccines. Socioeconmic consequences of the technology are also considered.
