Module INQUIRY BASED BIOLOGY TEACHING AND LEARNING

Module code: BI317
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: BIOLOGY
International: No
Overview Overview

Objective: To bring an enquiry-led approach to the teaching of practical Biology in second level schools. The module focuses specifically on the practical component of the Leaving Cert Biology Syllabus.

The aim of this module is to give undergraduate trainee biology teachers the capacity to design and enact high-quality learning experiences that go beyond prescribed senior cycle (Leaving Certificate) biology experiments. The module explores the teaching of biology practical work through enquiry. Students are encouraged to explore and to be as creative as possible in their thinking about how student learning in practical biology can best be achieved in secondary schools. Four hours a week are scheduled for this module (1 classroom-based and 3 lab-based). The general format of the module follows three strands:

1) Student-led teaching: The students are asked to ‘think outside the box’ to bring enquiry and creativity to their teaching of a selection of senior-cycle Biology experiments currently on the Leaving Certificate syllabus.
2) Student-led research: The students are asked to design and present their own piece of enquiry-driven research.
3) Teacher demonstration: Module facilitators present some examples of enquiry-led teaching to the students – through taught lab sessions.
