On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Describe the various reagents and methods used for recombinant DNA technology and explain how these are applied to research and diagnostics.
• Describe the processes of transcription, mRNA processing, and translation.
• Explain in detail how eukaryotic gene expression can be regulated transcriptionally and post-transcriptionally.
• Define the term epigenetics and relate this to gene expression.
• Describe chromatin and explain how chromatin status can influence gene expression.
• Distinguish between different classes of mobile genetic elements present in prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes.
• Describe the various sequence elements that are present in eukaryotic genomes and discuss how they influence genome size and organisation.
• Describe with examples how mobile genetic elements can influence gene expression and organismal phenotype.
