• Outline the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
• Describe animal and plant cell structures, organelle function and the components and function of the Endomembrane and Cytoskeletal systems.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the connection between chemical composition and function in biological molecules and macromolecules
• Describe the defining characteristics, structure and replication abilities of viruses, bacteria and fungi.
• Describe the dominant and recessive patterns of Mendelian inheritance
• Demonstrate an understanding of the Central Dogma and the relationship between genes and proteins
• Describe the processes driving evolution at the population level, including the process of speciation.
• Use Chi-square statistics to test if a population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Multiple Choice Questionnaires (mid-term and end-of-term): 12.5% Learning Outcome Assessments (weekly quizzes): 10% Practical write-ups/work books: 5% Weekly Assignment (using Connect System): 2.5%

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? No
• Students must pass the continuous assessment and the end of year written examination components independently. For students who do not satisfy this requirement, the lower of the two marks, calculated as a percentage of the total mark for the module, will be returned.
• Penalties: Late submissions will be accepted with penalty.

• The University scheduled written exam may be re-taken in the autumn. Continuous assessment mark is carried forward to the Autumn.
• University scheduled written examination (Autumn): 120 minutes
