Module THEORY AND PRACTICE FOR ANTHROPOLOGISTS AND ETHNOGRAPHERS

Module code: AN801
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ANTHROPOLOGY
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Patty A. Gray (ANTHROPOLOGY)
Overview Overview

This course is built on the close reading ethnographic monographs, stressing theoretical, ethical and methodological issues. In each seminar, students meet to intensively discuss their ideas about the ethnographies. A member of staff is present for each seminar and will contribute challenging questions, but discussion is expected to be student-driven. The objective of this module is to form a cohort out of incoming PhD students and provide a context for them to explore how contemporary anthropologists frame problems of evidence, representation, and theory in the building of arguments. Students will critically question how an ethnography weds evidence to theory in order to persuade.
