This module introduces the study of performance as a modality of human action. Performance theory came of age in the 1960s with the work of anthropologists like Turner, Bateson, Bauman, Schechner, who focused on ritual, play, and expressive culture. It was revised by Butler, Goffman, Bourdieu and others who identified the performative aspects of power and domination in the social construction of categories such as gender and class. More recently, performance theory has contributed to linguistic anthropology, theatre and media studies, and ethnomusicology, as well as to the anthropology of the senses. We will explore the theoretical bases of performance theory and its recent extensions, through the critical reading of several ethnographic case studies.
