Module code: AN306
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: ANTHROPOLOGY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Formal education is an almost universal human experience today, and is increasingly taken for granted. But does education facilitate the personal development of individuals or is it a technique for disciplining populations towards their economic exploitation? What are the concepts of the person, knowledge, and learning, that underlie contemporary education systems? And what is fueling the desire for ever higher levels of education around the world while employment opportunities for university graduates remain or become more uncertain in many places? This module takes a closer look at broader and particular social and cultural dynamics of education through a global lens, and invites to interrogate its conceptual foundations. Exploring case studies relating to approaches, experiences, and critiques of formal education in varied settings, this module spans the realms of global policy for the expansion of educational opportunities to ideas about the transmission of knowledge in the classroom.
