This compulsory course looks at contemporary theory and ethnographic approaches in anthropology. We take important engagements by anthropologists with violence, trauma and social suffering as an access route into reflections on anthropological theory. The course also looks at the ways in which ethnographic methods and theory have been used to throw new light on this important topic. Students will study two influential texts, Michael Taussig’s Shamanism, Colonialism and the Wildman and Veena Das’s Life and Words: Violence and the Descent into the Ordinary. The course will include a discussion workshop, in-class discussion, and a feedback session.
