Module AREA STUDIES - SPAIN

Module code: AN230C
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: ANTHROPOLOGY
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Patty A. Gray (ANTHROPOLOGY)
Overview Overview

We focus on a variety of anthropological encounters with Spain, its regions and its people. In the process, we will explore such diverse topics as “pride” and “shame”, tourism, political economy, festivals, religion and fascism. We will ask questions relating to notions of identity, history and heritage in Spain, and its place in Europe. We briefly explore the Spanish Civil War, the Franco regime and its legacy in contemporary Spain. Our principal concern throughout the module centres on anthropologists’ accounts and approaches to the study of Spain.
