	Overview
	The prospective disappearance of up to half of the world’s languages by 2021 has become a major concern for linguists and speakers alike. This module introduces students to the intertwined phenomena of language endangerment and revitalisation. In the first half of the module, students examine research into endangerment and related topics including Language Contact and Change, Language Shift, and Language Documentation. In the second half of the module, students investigate responses to language endangerment, including Language Revitalisation, Language Planning and Policy, and Standardisation.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Describe the processes that lead to language endangerment. Apply scholarship on language endangerment to contemporary case studies. Investigate metrics of endangerment and vitality commonly applied to marginalised languages. Compare and contrast varied community-based approaches to revitalisation in Indigenous and European contexts. Devise and complete a brief research project.
