• Summarise in broad terms the evolution of Global English and the current sociolinguistic arrangements surrounding it in a selection of national and supranational contexts.
• Research and construct a critical analysis of academic discourses in the area of Global English.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the debates surrounding the status and teaching of native and non-native varieties of English.
• Evaluate the impact of Global English on selected local, regional, national and supranational contexts and their respective languages.
• Research, develop and articulate in writing balanced and well-structured arguments.

• 12 weekly seminars of 60 minutes. This course consists of 12 hours of workshop-style work, for which preparation and participation are required.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Continuous Assessment detail(s): 30% In-class presentation, 70% Final essay

• Pass standard: 40%

• Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
