Module GLOBAL ENGLISH, TESOL AND EMI

Module code: ALIS621
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Clive Earls (GERMAN)
Overview Overview

The module investigates the phenomenon of Global English, examining its historical evolution and exploring its current sociolinguistic reality across an array of national and supranational contexts before engaging with two of the most tangible manifestations of Global English in the educational context, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and EMI (English Medium of Instruction). Students will engage with the language and pedagogical dimensions underlying each phenomena and analyse the sociolinguistic debates surrounding the development of such phenomena into language political industries which impact significantly on the status and learning of native and non-native varieties of English, and other international, national, regional and minority languages.
