Module INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLINGUISTICS

Module code: ALIS611
Credits: 10
Semester: 1
Department: SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES
International: Yes
Coordinator: Clive Earls (GERMAN)
Overview Overview

The module introduces students to the study of language as a social phenomenon, in particular the reciprocal relationship between language and society, and deepen their knowledge of such. This overview is contextualised particularly within the realities of modern globalised societies with competing local, regional, national, supranational, and international agendas. The topics examined in this module include language and communities, identity, gender, education, politics, power and rights. Additionally, given Sociolinguistics’ anchoring in empirical data generation and analysis, students will also engage with the various avenues and approaches to sociolinguistic enquiry.
