The creation and study of digital artefacts comprises various forms of media — from text to images and from sound to virtual objects and spaces. The focus of study is on photographs — both analog and those born in the digital medium. How do we, as ‘readers’ of photographs, understand the still image? How can these understandings be communicated through formal descriptions in the process of building digital photographic collections? The course investigates photographs from diverse contexts — from early Victorian photography to photographs on the social web (e.g. Flickr and Instagram) — in order to gain a clear idea of the choices that need to be made while creating repositories that may aid their study. Beyond theoretical paradigms, the lectures focus on computational methods that may be used to describe and analyse the digitised photographic object.
