Module code: ADT001
Credits: 10
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ADULT EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Gareth Burns (ADULT EDUCATION), Dr Jerry O'Neill (ADULT EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This module is designed to facilitate learners to explore their educational and biographical journeys through a process of critical reflection that will help them identify their emerging educational philosophies and values about the teachers they would like to become.

This process of critical reflection will be facilitated through learner-centred engagement with the following:
• An introduction to the foundation disciplines of psychology, philosophy, sociology and history of education, which forms the theoretical basis for this module.
• An introduction to the education system, schooling in Ireland, what a teaching career is ‘like’, and what ‘type’ of teacher they want to be through fluid and reflexive engagement with educational theories, issues, policies and their own biographies.
• An introduction to pedagogy and school placement with a strong focus on learner-centred, equity-sensitive and active approaches to teaching and learning and school leadership and cultures.
