This module will explore a range of theories from philosophy to think carefully about the purpose of education in society and good pedagogical practice in the classroom. Liberal, humanist, pragmatist, feminist and radical approaches to education will be foregrounded to enhance students' understanding of the most influential ideas in the field of adult and further education. Some material from poststructuralist, analytical, critical realist, communitarian and existentialist writings will be selected and made available which will chart more recent developments in educational theory and to explore the topics such as power, lifelong learning, equality and socio-cultural change. Overall, the main purpose of the module is to offer concepts and theories which will develop students’ capacity to critically reflect on practice. Particular importance will be given to class members articulating and refining their own ideas about pedagogy and the purpose of education.

A minimum of eighty per cent attendance is required and active participation is expected in this module
