Module code: AD264
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Quota: 25
Department: ADULT EDUCATION
International: No
Overview Overview

There are two main focuses in this elective stream - group membership and group facilitation and leadership. Understanding group membership issues is an essential requirement for effective group/team work. The first component of the course is grounded in two questions: ‘What kind of communicator am I? What kind of group member am I? On completion, students will be aware of their personal communication strengths and challenges, be familiar with group work concepts and practices.

The second focus is on group facilitation and leadership. Students will be asked to focus on their own leadership style and on that of others to develop an understanding of leadership and acts of leadership in groups. They will also be supported to develop your own leadership style.

Throughout the course students will be encouraged to reflect on group processes; your own membership and roles; external experiences; and to recognise dimensions of membership and leadership in a group.

The modules will be experiential with input as appropriate with students becoming a ’temporary ‘group’ for the duration of each module.
The elective stream ‘working creatively in groups and teams’ will develop your capacity to participate effectively in teams and groups in a variety of settings. You will also learn facilitation and leadership skills designed to promote successful group and team projects in college and work settings.

The module ‘communication and participation in groups’ is designed to develop student’s ability to understand group and team processes with particular emphasis on their own roles and style of participation. In realising this aim the course is designed around the following objectives:
1. To introduce students to a variety of Group Work
concepts and theories by providing an opportunity to
read and discuss Group Work literature (including diversity and difference in groups)
2. To utilise theory & experience to reflect on students own
Group Work experiences

Please note that this elective stream will not be offered if a sufficient number of students do not register.
