	Overview
	The aim of this course is to provide participants with a broad overview of key theoretical frameworks in relation to substance misuse and dependence and to reflect on basic helping and intervention skills. This course focuses on introducing participants to current debates on addiction. On completion, participants will have become familiar with contemporary addiction theory as well as prevention and treatment strategies. They will have explored associated issues such as public policy, factual information on substance misuse, gender issues and community drug prevention issues to name but a few. The course will provide participants with adequate knowledge and foundation skills to respond effectively and positively to addiction-related issues as they arise at work or in the community.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Understand some of the professional issues and debates which arise within drug and alcohol services Understand the main theories and principal treatment regimes aimed at tackling substance misuse and dependence Identify and evaluate the direction of drug and alcohol policy development over the past thirty years in the Irish context Compare and contrast the merits and demerits of approaches to substance misuse e.g. the harm reduction model vs the abstinence model Engage in critical debate through in-class discussion on topics and themes covered throughout the course, with a particular emphasis on learner self-reflection Use academic and stylistic conventions appropriately and consistently in accordance with the rules governing academic assignments Locate and recognize substance misuse within it�s biological, psycho-social, cultural and political contexts

	This course is aimed at people already working or seeking to work in the area of drug and alcohol services or related areas: � Community and Youth workers, Garda�, Teachers, � Social and Health Care workers including doctors and nurses, care centre managers, � Counsellors and psychotherapists. Policy makers. �Project or outreach workers in various services that deal with people experiencing problems with Drugs and Alcohol or homelessness.As the content and subject matter of this programme can be challenging we ask that people interested in taking the NUI certificate in Addiction Studies to submit a 300 - 500 word piece titled 'Why I would like to take the Addiction Studies course'.
